The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed substandard and expired products valued at over ₦20 billion in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The destruction exercise, which began on Thursday at the Moniya dumpsite, was supervised by the agency’s South-West Zonal Office.
Speaking during the exercise, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christiana Adeyeye, said the move was part of the agency’s effort to safeguard public health by ensuring that unwholesome products do not find their way back into the market.
Adeyeye, represented by Mrs. Florence Uba, Deputy Director, Pharmaceutical Division, Investigation and Enforcement, Apapa, Lagos, said the items destroyed included falsified and substandard medical products, unwholesome processed foods and additives, unsafe cosmetics, and other expired goods.
“Also up for destruction today are damaged and expired products voluntarily handed over by compliant companies, non-governmental organisations, and trade unions,” she said.
“The estimated street value of the products planned for destruction is ₦20 billion.”
The DG noted that NAFDAC confiscated the products from manufacturers, importers, and distributors during various enforcement operations across the South-West.
She urged community leaders, health professionals, religious figures, and journalists to intensify public sensitisation on the dangers of patronising unlicensed drug sellers and unregistered pharmaceutical outlets.
Adeyeye also commended the Nigeria Customs Service for handing over more than 25 containers of seized goods to the agency for destruction and thanked other security agencies — including the Police, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria — for their continued collaboration.
“Together, we can protect the health and safety of all Nigerians,” she added.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that representatives of the Police, Customs, DSS, Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Ministry of Health were present during the exercise.
