THE National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has refuted claims that it organized a protest against the recent hike in petrol prices.

This denial comes in response to a purported statement attributed to the association, which announced plans to shut down major cities nationwide in protest of the price increase.

The alleged statement indicated that a protest would commence on September 15, 2024, across major cities, calling for a reversal of the petrol price hike and the removal of the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.

However, NANS Senate President, Afeez Akinteye, labeled the statement as false and urged security agencies to investigate its source.

“We strongly advise the public, media, and all stakeholders to dismiss these misleading reports. The entities behind these rumors are anonymous groups looking to exploit the NANS name for their malicious agenda,” Akinteye stated.

He further explained that these rumors were intended to destabilize the country and create unnecessary panic.

“We categorically distance ourselves from any such plans or intentions,” he said.

Akinteye called for a thorough investigation into the origin of the false information, stressing that those responsible should be held accountable.

He emphasized that using the NANS name to spread such harmful and baseless claims threatens national security and discredits the genuine efforts of students advocating for positive change through legitimate means.

Akinteye also urged security agencies to apprehend any individuals or groups attempting to incite unrest under the guise of NANS.

“NANS remains committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students. We will continue to do so through peaceful, lawful, and constructive channels. NANS stands for peace, progress, and the unity of our nation,” he affirmed.
