Godiya Akwashiki, the senator representing Nasarawa North senatorial district of Nasarawa State is dead.
Akwashiki died at the age of 52 after a protracted illness in an Indian hospital on Wednesday, December 31.
While his family is yet to make an official announcement about his death, close sources said the lawmaker has been sick for a long time.
According to the sources, the illness kept the senator away from the public as he was incapacitated long before his passing.
Also describing the lawmaker’s death as a rude shock, the source said Akwashiki during his time on earth touched several lives.
A big blow to the Eggon nation of Nasarawa, the source noted that Akwashiki left behind an unforgettable footprint of growth and development.
Before his demise, the lawmaker served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs and Vice Chairman of the Media and Public Affairs Committee,
Born in August 1973, the lawmaker won his election into the Nasarawa State House of Assembly in 2011 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He later became the Majority Leader of the House and upon his re-election, he emerged as the deputy speaker of the House in 2015.
After his time at the House, he contested for the Nasarawa North senatorial seat in 2019 and won under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In the build up of the 2023 general election, the late lawmaker defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) after he was denied the APC ticket for reelection.
Married and blessed with children, Akwashiki returned to the Nigerian Senate following his victory at the polls.
