Nigeria’s national grid experienced a system collapse on Wednesday morning, resulting in widespread power outages across the country.

According to reports, the grid lost power generation at around 11:00 am, with hourly power generation dropping from 4064 megawatts to 0.00MW by 1:00 pm.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to officially comment on the incident, but sources within power generation companies confirmed a general grid disturbance.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) took to social media to inform customers of the system disturbance, stating that gradual restoration of power supply had commenced.

This is the first reported grid collapse in 2025, following a line tripping incident in January. In 2024, the grid collapsed 12 times, and over 100 times in the past decade.

The frequent grid collapses have left many Nigerians frustrated and concerned about the reliability of the country’s power infrastructure.
