NDDC empowers N’Delta girls in STEM education

The Niger Delta Development Commission has revealed its significant steps to boost science and technology education by equipping young girls with essential skills for the modern world.

The initiative aims to bridge the gender gap in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and foster innovation in the Niger Delta region.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Girl Child STEM competition in Port Harcourt, NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, represented by the Director of Education, Dr Awele Chukwudifu, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to human capital development.

“This STEM competition has brought enormous benefits to the girl child by equipping them with the technological skills essential for the future,” she said, appreciating the NDDC Board and Management for their dedication to advancing education.

Professor Continue Eletu, representing the Director of the Rivers State Office, emphasised that the initiative aligns with the Commission’s policy priorities.

He noted that the Ogbuku-led administration remains committed to empowering girls in the Niger Delta by providing them opportunities to excel in STEM-related fields.

“This initiative gives students a platform to excel in mathematics, engineering, and science, which are fundamental for innovation and societal growth,” Eletu stated.

The STEM competition featured participants from the nine Niger Delta states and served as a platform to nurture future female leaders in technology and engineering.

Eletu stressed that NDDC’s policies align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, adding, “When you train a girl, you train a nation.”

The Lead Consultant for the programme, Chief Godson Ideozu, described the event as the culmination of a rigorous selection process.

He revealed that the next phase would involve mentorship, ensuring sustained interest in STEM fields.

The event’s highlight was the presentation of awards to the top-performing students, with the overall winner, Miss Jegede Osamagbe expressing gratitude, “I thank the NDDC for this opportunity. To every young girl out there, remember—if you can imagine it, you can achieve it.”
