The Cross River State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Morrison Ogbonna, has been found dead in a hotel room in Calabar.
Naijaonpoint reports that Ogbonna’s lifeless body was discovered on Thursday morning, September 18, 2025, by his officers who had gone to pick him up for an official assignment.
A source who spoke with The Guardian said several knocks on his hotel room door went unanswered, leading to the intervention of the management.
“When the door was eventually opened, he was found dead,” the source disclosed.
The late NDLEA commander had only been deployed to Cross River last month to replace Mrs Rachel Umebuali.
His sudden demise has sent shock waves through the agency and the state’s security circle.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Cross River, SP Irene Ugbo-Obase, confirmed the development but said the cause of death was yet to be determined.
“I can confirm to you that it is true, but what led to the death is what I can’t readily tell you,” she said.
Ogbonna’s death comes amid rising security concerns in Calabar. In recent weeks, at least three other corpses have been discovered in different parts of the city.
These include the body of a headless teenager behind the Cross River Basin Authority in Ikot Effanga Mkpa, an unidentified corpse found at the entrance of the NYSC Secretariat along Murtala Mohammed Highway, and another body recovered around Marian.
