WATCH THE VIDEO HERE The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has directed all electricity distribution companies (Discos) to publish the refunds made to customers who purchased meters under the Meter Asset Providers (MAP) scheme. The commission made the announcement on its X handle after its first Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Stakeholders meeting in 2025 on Monday. “NERC has directed Discos to publish details of MAP refunds on their websites for transparency. This will demonstrate commitment and consistency to the scheme and encourage customers,” the agency stated. The Meter Asset Provider (MAP) Scheme was introduced by the NERC to allow energy consumers in the country to purchase prepaid meters from the Discos through third-party companies licensed by the regulator. It was designed to bridge the metering gap after the energy distribution firms said they were short of funds to provide meters to customers. The initial deal was to allow customers to procure the meters and get refunds through energy units from Discos. But over the years, many electricity consumers who bought prepaid meters via this programme claimed they were not refunded as earlier agreed. At the meeting on Monday, several customers lamented about this and others, including the tariff methodology and impact of the state transition, NESI liquidity, financial evaluation of the market and the transition to a multi-tier electricity market with regards to the SERCs among others. The quarterly meeting brings together energy stakeholders to discuss the state of the NESI and address critical issues in the sector.
