WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THE Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has finalized the transfer of regulatory authority to four states: Enugu, Ekiti, Ondo, and Imo. This was announced on NERC’s official X handle yesterday, confirming that these states are now fully responsible for overseeing their electricity markets. Currently, there are 11 electricity distribution companies in Nigeria, including Abuja, Benin, Enugu, Eko, Ibadan, Ikeja, Kaduna, Kano, Jos, Port Harcourt, and Yola, along with Aba Power Electric as the 12th. With the transfer of oversight in four states, adjustments have been made to the market structures of the Enugu, Benin, and Ibadan distribution companies. NERC also revealed that as of January 10, 2025, it has begun transferring regulatory oversight to 10 states. The remaining six states—Oyo, Edo, Kogi, Lagos, Ogun, and Niger—are in the process of completing the transition. Once finalized, these states will also regulate their respective electricity markets. The commission explained that the enactment of the 2023 Electricity Act has significantly restructured the operations of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, which had been in place since 2013. By 2025, the remaining six states are expected to incorporate their sub-companies, further reshaping the electricity market structure.
