In Your Dreams has debuted with a strong Rotten Tomatoes score. The new Netflix animated feature follows two siblings who venture into the world of dreams, hoping that The Sandman will grant their wish to save their parents’ marriage. The movie features a star-studded voice cast that includes Craig Robinson, Cristin Milioti, Gia Carides, SungWon Cho, and Avengers: Doomsday star Simu Liu.
During the film’s limited theatrical release ahead of its Netflix debut on November 14, In Your Dreams has now received enough reviews from critics for it to have earned an official score on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer. While the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, at the time of writing, it has earned a solidly Fresh score of 85% aggregated from 13 different reviews.
The individual scores on critics’ In Your Dreams reviews are also decent, generally hitting a range between 7 out of 10 and 8 out of 10. While the movie has not received any perfect scores just yet, the 11 critics with positive opinions generally agree that the movie blends whimsical imagination with a more grounded storyline that tugs at the heartstrings.
The strong debut score for In Your Dreams also marks the first time that a Netflix animated movie has earned a Fresh score since their smash hit KPop Demon Hunters premiered on June 20. That movie, in addition to earning a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 95% and a Verified Hot audience score of 99%, quickly became the most-watched movie of all time on the streaming platform.
Netflix’s two immediate animated follow-ups were not nearly as well-received critically. Those titles would be Genndy Tartakovsky’s adult comedy Fixed (which has scores of 56% on the Tomatometer and 42% on the Popcornmeter) and the Roald Dahl adaptation The Twits (which has matching scores of 52% on the Tomatometer and the Popcornmeter). Both scores for both movies fell below the 60% threshold past which movies can be considered Fresh.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how In Your Dreams performs on Netflix once it makes its official streaming debut. It ultimately seems unlikely to perform quite as well as KPop Demon Hunters, which was a surprise runaway hit.
In fact, In Your Dreams will have to compete directly with KPop Demon Hunters, which is still charting. It most recently reclaimed the No. 2 spot on Netflix’s chart of the most-watched English-language movies for the week of October 27.
However, if audiences have reactions that are similar to the majority of critics, In Your Dreams could become another solid animated success for the streaming platform, which is also behind a number of other popular animated originals such as The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, and Gullermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.
