After being introduced in Thunderbolts*, the New Avengers finally have their own “Avengers Assemble!”-style battlecry. With the team of antiheroes set to return in Avengers: Doomsday, it’s the perfect time to give them a hard-edged motto to match the significantly less vicious original team.
Winter Soldier Debuts the New Avengers’ Battlecry
In a preview of the upcoming New Avengers #6, shared by AIPT, Bucky Barnes tries to motivate his team to move against the villainous Killuminati (evil clones of major heroes including Doctor Strange, Professor X and Black Panther.) After a massive attack on Japan, the team debate what tactics to embrace, with Barnes arguing for a stealth strike against the evil team.
While the Winter Soldier is the hero who brought this new comic team – nicknamed “Earth’s Deadliest Heroes” – together, he recently stood down, with the team choosing Black Widow as their new leader. However, Bucky then discovered that Natasha is seemingly working against the team. Attempting to subtly reclaim leadership in the style of his own mentor, Captain America, Bucky Barnes declares, “Avengers, attack!”
It’s a darker motto than “Avengers Assemble!” – which has its roots in the idea of the team being stronger together – but it’s an honest reflection of this significantly more violent team, with every member being a notable killer (none moreso than Eddie Brock’s Carnage.) The issue comes from the creative team of Sam Humphries, Ton Lima and Rain Beredo.
