New Hello Kitty Movie Gets 2028 Release Date From Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema’s Hello Kitty movie has been in development for years. Now, the beloved Sanrio character’s feature film finally gets a release date.

Warner Bros. posted on its official Instagram account that the Hello Kitty Movie will be coming out on July 21, 2028. The short clip showed Hello Kitty pointing at WB’s logo with her iconic red bow added to it. The caption for the reel said, “Hello Hollywood #HelloKittyMovie is coming to theaters July 21, 2028!”

Reports first surfaced about Sanrio planning a movie adaptation of Hello Kitty in 2015. It was revealed a few years later, in 2019, that New Line and Flynn Picture Company were working on a feature film. This was Sanrio’s first licensing deal with a big studio that featured Hello Kitty and other fan-favorite characters such as My Melody, Gudetama, and Little Twin Stars.

The project will be directed by Leo Matsuda, who worked as a story artist on popular animated films such as Zootopia and Wreck-It Ralph. The script was written by Dana Fox, one of Wicked’s writers and executive producers.

Sanrio founder Shintaro Tsuji expressed his joy after the licensing deal. He said in a statement, “I am extremely pleased that Hello Kitty and other popular Sanrio characters will be making their Hollywood debut. Hello Kitty has long been a symbol of friendship, and we hope this film will only serve to grow that circle of friendship around the world.”

Hello Kitty was created by Yuko Shimizu in 1974. She was introduced to the world as “Kitty White.” She is a British cat who lives in the suburbs of London with her family, including her twin sister Mimmy, who wears a yellow bow instead of a red one like her. She skyrocketed to popularity, eventually inspiring several animated shows, books, video games, and endless merchandise for people of all ages.

The Hello Kitty Movie will be released on July 21, 2028.
