New Islamic Year Celebration: Kebbi Declares Public Holiday

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has officially declared Monday, July 8, a public holiday to celebrate the commencement of the new Islamic year, 1st Muharram 1446AH.

Naijaonpoint reports that the announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Establishment, Auwal Dogondaji, in a statement released to the press in Birnin Kebbi on Friday.

Dogondaji emphasized that July 7 marks the beginning of Muharram, underscoring the government’s decision to reschedule the public holiday to July 8 to honor the significance of the Islamic new year.

In his message, Dogondaji extended warm congratulations to the global Muslim community on the occasion of the new Islamic calendar, urging them to continue praying fervently for peace, security, and prosperity in Kebbi State and across Nigeria.

“I convey the governor’s heartfelt felicitations to Muslims worldwide,” remarked the commissioner.

Similarly, Governor Seyi Makinde-led government of Oyo State has declared Monday, July 8, 2024, as a public holiday.

The public holiday was declared in honour of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1446AH.

The Oyo State government said it recognizes the importance of this occasion in the lives of the Muslim community residing in the state.

“Monday, July 8, 2024, has been declared a work-free day to mark the Hijrah, which signifies Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD,” Oyelade said.
