A new Halo game will reportedly be revealed this Friday, October 24, marking the iconic Xbox franchise’s long-expected debut on the PlayStation 5. Halo Studios (previously known as 343 Industries) has already promised an update on its progress in transferring Halo to Unreal Engine 5, but has been officially tight-lipped on what exactly is in store.

Gaming industry reporter Rebs Gaming has corroborated and explained a cryptic post by Halo dataminer grunt.api, which featured only the PS5 logo, plus alt text of a red X next to “Switch.” Rebs Gaming says ... is “re-confirming that a new Halo game, specifically the one being announced on Friday, is coming to PlayStation 5,” and that there’s no evidence of a Switch or Switch 2 port. Friday, October 24, is when this year’s Halo World Championship is taking place, and a Halo Waypoint blog post previously promised that Halo Studios is going to be “sharing more about what [it’s] been working on” at the event.

Halo: Combat Evolved Remake Seems Most Likely

Halo Studios has made it clear that something is being shown off at the World Championship on October 24, but the developer’s caginess has offered no hints. Rumors of the original game, Halo: Combat Evolved, getting remade have been swirling for a long time, though, and they’ve only intensified in the run-up to the World Championship. CE has already received a remake once, 2011’s Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, but the assumption has been that another is leading the franchise’s move to Unreal Engine 5.

These rumors logically align with Microsoft’s broader strategy of bringing its flagship games to Sony’s PlayStation. Gears of War: Reloaded remastered that series’ debut title and marked its jump to the PS5. Grunt.api claimed earlier this year that Halo was coming to PS5 “very soon,” but believed it was not Halo Infinite nor The Master Chief Collection.

Another development in Halo rumors revolves around a new, multiplayer-only title. Rebs Gaming released a video about what they know a few days ago, claiming the project was looking to be a long-term destination for Halo multiplayer gameplay. A regularly updated, live-service Halo title would presumably replace Halo Infinite, the franchise’s current ongoing venture.

Just like the supposed Combat Evolved remake, there has been no official word on the future of Halo multiplayer. Such a project does, admittedly, fit the theme of the Halo World Championship better than a remake of the original game. Aside from myriad updates to Infinite, Halo has been very quiet when it comes to the original, gaming side of the franchise, though that will apparently change on Friday.
