Marvel officially has a new Silver Surfer, as the publisher completes a passing of the torch moment fans have been waiting for. After several issues of chasing the Surfer, Agent Kelly Koh has done more than just team up with Norrin Radd; she’s gained his powers, in what is expected to be the start of a brand-new era for the hero.
Death of the Silver Surfer #4 is written by Grek Pak, with art by Sumit Kumar. It is the penultimate issue of the series, and the long-heralded moment in which Agent Koh gains the Silver Surfer’s powers has finally come to fruition.
Now, the question remains how the miniseries will make good on its title’s dire promise in the final issue.

When the Death of the Silver Surfer series was announced, it naturally stoked speculation that this would lead to a new character taking on the cosmic hero’s identity and powers. Death of the Silver Surfer #1’s focus on Kelly Koh, an agent for the “Bureau of Alien Neutralization” seemed to telegraph, for many readers, that she would be this successor to the classic Silver Surfer.
Koh started out the series trying to take down Norrin Radd, but by Death of the Silver Surfer #4, she has learned the hard way who the real bad guys are. Koh’s empowerment as the Silver Surfer comes alongside a moment of utter personal tragedy, as her mother dies in her arms.
Death of the Silver Surfer #4’s big surprise, though, is that while Kelly Koh’s mother doesn’t survive, the original Silver Surfer still does. Most readers expected that Kelly gaining the Surfer’s powers would come at the expense of Norrin Radd’s death, but the series has something else in store for its climax.

Death of the Silver Surfer #4 ends with Norrin Radd hurtling toward Earth, ready to use his incredible powers to bring cosmic justice to the planet’s villains. So, assuming Radd will, in fact, die on this mission, the big question looming over the final issue is the same as when the book was first announced: how?
The synopsis for issue #5 gives nothing away, except to seemingly confirm the Silver Surfer will die. It reads:
THE ALL-NEW SILVER SURFER?! The Silver Surfer is dead. Long live the Silver Surfer.
Of course, as of now, there are officially two Silver Surfers active at the same time, meaning there is an outside chance Kelly Koh could be the one to die in the finale.
However, this would make the “all-new Silver Surfer” hype a major swerve. That would be a bold move on Marvel’s part in its own right. So, with a month to go before Death of the Silver Surfer #5 is released, the odds still remain in favor of the idea that Marvel is killing off the original Silver Surfer.
