Nicki Minaj fans are voicing their frustration in a dramatic way, with thousands signing an online petition calling for the rapper to be deported to her native Trinidad and Tobago.
As of Tuesday morning, more than 18,800 people had signed a Change.org petition urging the U.S. government to review Minaj’s immigration status.
The petition claims supporters feel “betrayed” by what they see as her shift from progressive views to more conservative positions.
“This is personal for those of us who watched Nicki rise as a beacon of hope, only to feel abandoned by her shift in values,” wrote petition creator Tristan Hamilton. “Her public platform carries weight and responsibility, and her recent statements are a stark contrast to the solidarity she once showed.”
The petition further alleges that Minaj’s status in the United States should be examined, stating that she is not a U.S. citizen and questioning her continued residency. Hamilton said her recent comments have left fans “deflated and disillusioned.”
The backlash comes after Minaj appeared at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest and spoke alongside Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. Minaj has also drawn attention for expressing views that some fans believe conflict with her past support of LGBTQ+ communities.
Minaj previously criticized Donald Trump during his first term but has recently aligned herself with causes associated with the MAGA movement.
