The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has expressed sorrow over the killing of two Nigerians in separate violent attacks in the United Kingdom and Canada at the start of the new year.
In a statement issued in Abuja on January 9, 2026, the Commission’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the deaths were disturbing and painful.
Naijaonpoint reports that the message was delivered through the Commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.
Dabiri-Erewa sent condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims, describing the period as a very hard time for them.
She also praised the quick action taken by the UK Metropolitan Police and the Toronto Police Service following the incidents.
She appealed for full and open investigations so that those responsible can be brought to justice.
According to her, proper handling of the cases will help give some relief to the grieving families.
The NiDCOM boss further assured that the Commission will continue to work with the Nigerian High Commissions in the UK and Canada to give support to the affected families, in line with its responsibilities.
Reports show that one of the victims, John Temitope Onetufo, aged 23, was stabbed to death on New Year’s Eve in the Lewisham area of London.
In Canada, another Nigerian, Osemwengie Irorere, aged 46, was shot dead at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
