A powerful overnight downpour has led to a deadly flash flood in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, resulting in the deaths of 21 people and leaving more than 10 others unaccounted for.
According to Ibrahim Hussaini, Acting Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the heavy rainfall devastated the communities of Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa town.
The intense floodwaters swept away over 50 homes along with their occupants, causing extensive loss of lives and property.
Rescue efforts were launched immediately by NSEMA in collaboration with the local government, divers, and volunteers.
As of the time of reporting, 21 bodies had been recovered, while search operations continue for over 10 individuals still missing.
Three survivors — a woman and her two children — are currently receiving treatment for injuries and trauma at Mokwa General Hospital.
“The flood was sudden and overwhelming,” Hussaini said. “We are still searching for more missing persons and are committed to supporting affected families and communities during this difficult time.”
NSEMA has assured residents that relief and recovery operations will continue in the coming days.
