NIGER: NEMA distributes relief materials to tanker explosion victims

The tanker explosion occurred on Saturday morning along the Dikko-Maje Road, opposite Baddegi Station.

Reports revealed that the disaster was caused when a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit overturned while transferring fuel to another tanker. The spilled fuel ignited after coming into contact with a generator used for the transfer, resulting in the explosion.

The incident resulted in the loss of 98 lives, left 69 people injured with varying degrees of severity, and destroyed 20 shops.

NEMA’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, visited the community to commence the distribution of relief materials.

She emphasized that this effort aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s directive and reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to helping the community recover from this tragedy.

“Following the initial rapid assessment conducted by NEMA officials, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), and other first responders, we are here to provide immediate assistance with food, non-food items, and medical supplies to the affected families,” she stated.

While expressing her condolences to the community, Umar assured that NEMA would coordinate comprehensive efforts to support their recovery. She also highlighted the importance of communities being prepared for disasters and taking proactive measures to protect lives and property.

She lauded the quick action of first responders, including NEMA, NSEMA, firefighters, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, medical personnel, security forces, community members, and other stakeholders who responded swiftly to save lives and reduce further damage.

Attending the event was the Deputy Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Afiniki Daudu, who thanked the Federal Government for its quick response in delivering relief items through NEMA.

Also present were the Chairman of Gurara Local Government Area, Alhaji Abdulhalim Abubakar; the Director General of Niger State SEMA, Abdullahi Arah; and community leaders.
