NIGER REPUBLIC: FG denies involvement in pipeline attack

In a statement issued today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian government denied any connection to the Lakurawa terrorist group or claims that its security forces were involved in the incident.

The statement expressed Nigeria’s condolences to Niger over the attack while reiterating its firm commitment to combating terrorism and distancing itself from any association with terrorist activities.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria categorically denies allegations by the Nigerien authorities that the Lakurawa terrorist group, with alleged support from foreign security forces, including Nigerian security forces, was responsible for the attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline on December 13, 2024, in Gaya, Dosso Region, Niger Republic.

“Nigeria sympathises with the Government of Niger over the unfortunate incident but clarifies that the perpetrators were neither supported nor assisted by Nigerian authorities.

“Nigeria remains resolute in its fight against terrorism and firmly disassociates itself from any such activities,” the statement read.

Niger’s junta-led government had earlier summoned the charge d’affaires at Nigeria’s embassy, accusing the country of serving as a “rear base” for efforts to destabilise Niger, as reported by Niger state television.

Relations between Nigeria and Niger have been strained since Niger’s military seized power in 2023 and severed ties with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The Nigerian government also dismissed accusations of French military operations in northern Nigeria allegedly aimed at destabilising Niger.

It labeled the claims as baseless and called for their outright rejection.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria firmly states that there are no French military troops in the northern part of the country preparing to destabilise the Government of Niger. These allegations are without merit and should be disregarded entirely.

“It is important to highlight that Nigeria’s relationship with France has always been guided by mutual respect, dignity, and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

“Nigeria remains committed to exploring peaceful means to maintain its cordial relationship with Niger for the benefit of the people in both nations,” the statement concluded.
