Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has said that relations between Nigeria and Germany are growing stronger, with over 90 German companies now operating in the country.
Tuggar disclosed this during the German Unity Day celebration held in Abuja over the weekend, describing the partnership as a model of “innovation, resilience, and shared prosperity.”
Represented by the Chief of Protocol in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Wahab Akande, Tuggar said the presence of German firms in Nigeria was boosting job creation and technology transfer.
“Over 90 German companies now operate in Nigeria, contributing to job creation and technology transfer, and reinforcing Germany’s position as Nigeria’s second-largest trading partner,” he said.
Trade Volume Rises to €3 Billion
According to the minister, bilateral trade between both nations has grown significantly, recording a 30 per cent increase and reaching an all-time high of €3 billion.
“The trade volume between Nigeria and Germany has surged by an impressive 30 per cent, reaching an all-time high of three billion euros. This milestone reflects not only the resilience of our economies, but also the mutual trust and shared vision that bind our nations,” Tuggar stated.
He noted that beyond trade, the two countries had deepened cooperation through strategic agreements covering education, renewable energy, security, and industrial partnerships.
While celebrating the unification of Germany and its enduring friendship with Nigeria, Tuggar commended Germany’s role as a global leader in innovation and diplomacy.
“Germany stands as a beacon of innovation, resilience, and global cooperation, which Nigeria is proud to count among its most valued partners,” he said.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to continue working closely with Berlin to drive sustainable growth, economic diversification, and people-to-people connections.
In her remarks, the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Mrs Annett Gunther, announced that the German-Nigerian Binational Commission would hold its next meeting in Berlin in the first week of November.
“We will discuss ways to further expand this partnership, particularly in the areas of energy and climate cooperation, investment and mineral resources, cultural exchange and migration,” she said.
Gunther emphasised that both nations, as leading economies on their respective continents, were committed to strengthening their alliance and exploring new opportunities.
“Germany and Nigeria, as strong economies and the most populous countries in their respective continents, want to join forces and come closer together to adjust their partnership to new opportunities,” she added.
The ambassador described Nigeria as an indispensable ally in upholding global peace and the international rules-based order.
“Nigeria is a strong partner in preserving the international rules-based order, based on international law and the UN Charter, and a strategic partner for Germany in Africa,” Gunther said.
She reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to maintaining a robust cooperation programme with Nigeria, particularly in the areas of green energy, vocational training, and good governance.
