Nigeria lost over ₦67b property, 100 lives to fire in 2024 — FFS

In a statement from the FFS, Controller General Abdulganiyu Jaji addressed the media at the FFS headquarters in Abuja, revealing that there were also over 100 fatalities linked to fire incidents during the same period.

Jaji noted that the Service successfully saved properties worth N1.94 trillion last year.

“In 2024, the Federal Fire Service effectively saved property valued at N1.94 trillion while recording an estimated property loss of N67.1 billion. During the year, we responded to fire and other emergencies, saving 30,890 lives, although over 100 lives were lost,” he stated.

He cautioned that fire outbreaks could increase during the harmattan season due to lower humidity and urged operators of fuel stations, petrol tankers, gas refilling stations, gas cylinder users, and the general public to adhere to safety protocols and regulations.

The Controller General emphasized that the Service would continue to pursue its objectives through effective strategies, operational efficiency, and proactive measures this year.

“We will also prioritize raising awareness and improving response times by utilizing advanced technologies such as the National Fire Detection and Alarm System (NAFDAS) and the Fire Alarm App known as N-Alert,” he added.

Jaji commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the procurement of modern firefighting equipment and the remodeling of the National Fire Academy.

He also urged Nigerians to support the repeal and re-enactment of the Fire Service Act of 1963, stating, “Achieving this will enhance the Service’s capacity for effective service delivery.”
