Nigeria marks 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day amid calls for improved security

The event honours the sacrifices of serving soldiers and fallen heroes. However, beyond the symbolic ritual, the armed forces hierarchy has been urged to intensify efforts to address the country’s insecurity.

President Bola Tinubu, currently in the UAE for the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, called on the armed forces to embrace innovation and adaptability in addressing security challenges.

He emphasised the need to boost military capabilities and equip personnel with the necessary resources and support.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, recently revealed that over 120,000 Boko Haram members, including more than 60,000 children, have voluntarily surrendered.

However, concerns persist about the military’s ability to combat terrorism effectively.

A former Nigerian soldier, Ayodele Olawale, shared his experience of fighting Boko Haram, highlighting the military’s lack of adequate ammunition.

He noted that Nigerian soldiers were limited to just 60 rounds of ammunition, while insurgents had more powerful weapons.

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has demanded an end to the deradicalisation and reintegration programme for detained Boko Haram fighters, citing its ineffectiveness and counterproductive nature.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has requested an additional N20 billion to pay families of deceased military personnel.

He emphasised the need to improve the living standards of military personnel.

Retired Gen. Lucky Irabor, former Chief of Defence Staff, advocated for special support for wounded and disabled veterans, as well as a comprehensive healthcare program for veterans.
