Nigeria Police Force Cautions Against protest

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a cautionary statement following reports that the “Take it Back Movement” plans to stage a protest across several states, including the Federal Capital Territory, on Monday, April 7, 2025.

The protest coincides with the National Police Day, a date designated by the federal government to celebrate the contributions of the Nigeria Police Force to national security.

In the statement, the NPF expressed concerns about the timing of the protest. “While we are not against the exercise of citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly, we are deeply concerned about the motive behind such a protest on the same day that the resilience and dedication of our officers are being celebrated,” said ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer. He highlighted that National Police Day is an important event, which will bring together dignitaries from across the globe, including Foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats.

The police further emphasized that the rationale for organizing the protest on such a significant day remains questionable, describing the planned demonstration as a “deliberate attempt” that could tarnish the reputation of both the police force and the nation. The statement also stressed that the protest was perceived as “mischievous” and urged the organizers to reconsider their plans.

The NPF reminded citizens that peaceful assembly is a constitutional right, but urged those planning to join the protest to pursue dialogue with the relevant government institutions instead. They also reaffirmed their commitment to carrying out their duties in line with the law and to upholding the rights of citizens.

ACP Adejobi called for a peaceful resolution, urging the protest organizers to “engage the proper institution of government” to express their grievances.
