THE Federal Government has sent a high-level team to the UK to negotiate the transfer of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who is serving nine years for organ harvesting.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar and Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi met UK Ministry of Justice officials in London on Monday.
The delegation later visited the Nigerian High Commission, hosted by Acting High Commissioner Mohammed Maidugu.
Sources say President Bola Tinubu wants Ekweremadu released early or transferred to Nigeria on humanitarian grounds.
“We are working on a prisoner exchange so he serves the rest in Nigeria,” a Foreign Affairs official told Daily Trust.
Talks are ongoing for compassionate parole or other UK legal options.
Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and doctor Obinna Obeta were convicted in March 2023 at the Old Bailey for exploiting a young Nigerian for kidney harvest.
