Nigeria reaffirms strong ties with US amid global uncertainty

The Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s long-standing strategic relationship with the United States, amid global uncertainty stirred by the imposition of tariffs by the US.

Oduwole said this on Saturday as she received an award during the 65th anniversary of the Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce, which also doubled as the inauguration of its new president, Sheriff Balogun.

She noted that the NACC was critical to fostering a mutually beneficial relationship between both countries.

She said, “The relationship between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the United States of America is a long and strategic one; the economic ties are deep, the human relations are deep, and they will continue to be so. So even as we face turbulent times globally and economic headwinds, we remain committed and steadfast to fostering this strong relationship, and this chamber will serve a critical role in making sure that we pave the pathway for mutually beneficial relationships.”

The new NACC president, in his acceptance speech, expressed his “deep humility and a profound sense of responsibility” as he accepted the leadership mantle. He extended his “heartfelt gratitude” to the board of directors and the entire membership for their confidence in him.

The newly inaugurated president outlined his vision for the chamber, anchored on three strategic pillars: expansion, innovation, and impact. He pledged to “double down on its mission to facilitate trade and investment between our two nations through high-level dialogue, strategic missions, and stronger engagement with US businesses and government entities.”

Key aspects of Balogun’s vision include the expansion of the reach of the chamber by establishing new chapters across Nigeria and in the US, building on the existing three US chapters in Maryland, Atlanta, and Houston. Focusing on measurable impact by ensuring the prosperity of member businesses through initiatives supporting MSMEs, unlocking access to finance, promoting entrepreneurship and actively engaging with public and private sector stakeholders to attract resources, open new markets, and boost Nigerian exports to the US.

A significant announcement during the event was the commencement of the journey to complete the NACC’s permanent headquarters. Balogun stated that this centre will be the “heartbeat of our vision to build the next wave of Nigerian leaders and entrepreneurs” and a “symbol of our ambition, resilience, and enduring legacy”.

The event also featured the presentation of several awards to distinguished individuals and organisations for their contributions to various sectors and the strengthening of Nigeria-US relations.

The grand ceremony was graced by a host of distinguished guests, including several state governors, the US Ambassador to Nigeria (represented), the Deputy Ambassador of the Netherlands, and monarchs.
