THE Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago has expressed concern over Nigeria’s progress, stating that despite over three decades of uninterrupted democratic governance, the country has not achieved the level of development it should have.
In a Democracy Day message released by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago urged citizens to reflect on the nation’s journey so far and recommit to the values of democracy.
He emphasized that although Nigeria has experienced democratic rule since 1999, much more is needed to improve governance and national development.
“This Democracy Day represents a victory of the people’s will over dictatorship,” Bago noted. “It is a reminder of the sacrifices, struggles, and resilience of our national heroes and heroines.”
He highlighted key democratic gains such as greater transparency, accountability, vibrant political discourse, and civic engagement.
However, he stressed the importance of continuing electoral reforms, empowering democratic institutions, and promoting inclusive governance to safeguard justice and equal opportunity for all.
Speaking in his state, Bago reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering democratic dividends through responsible leadership and sustainable development under the “New Niger” agenda.
“I call on the people for continuous support, understanding, and prayers as we work towards building a more secure and prosperous state,” he said. “Let us also continue to pray for purposeful leadership at all levels.”
Governor Bago concluded by pledging his unwavering dedication to the New Niger vision, expressing confidence that the state can achieve transformation through collective effort.
