Nigeria was on life support when Tinubu assumed office – Akpabio

Speaking during his 2024 Constituency Briefing and Empowerment Programme at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium, Akpabio, who represents Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District, urged Nigerians, particularly Akwa Ibom residents, to continue supporting President Tinubu as he tackles the country’s economic challenges.

“Nigeria was on life support,” he remarked, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

Akpabio highlighted the significant reforms under Tinubu’s administration, including the removal of fuel subsidies, floating of the naira, and introduction of tax bills, as steps aimed at stabilizing the economy.

Reflecting on a conversation with President Tinubu about the economy inherited from the previous administration, Akpabio revealed, “When Asiwaju Bola Tinubu took over, I asked him, ‘Are you still excited about being president after seeing the economy left behind by Emefiele?’ He responded, ‘I didn’t know it was this bad.’”

Despite the challenges, Akpabio expressed optimism about the reforms, describing them as painful but necessary for sustainable growth.

“You transformed Lagos; you can do it again for Nigeria. With time, we will see the results. We are praying for you, and God will grant you the wisdom to lead us to prosperity.”

He also encouraged beneficiaries of the empowerment programme to use the tools provided to improve their families’ economic status and cautioned against selling them.

“We have enough food supplies to distribute, so there should be no rush. These items will also reach other senatorial districts in the state.”

Akpabio commended Governor Umo Eno for fostering peace and inclusivity in Akwa Ibom, stressing, “Without peace, there can be no development. The governor has embraced everyone, irrespective of political affiliations.”

He also acknowledged the governor’s distribution of 1,000 bags of rice to the APC family in the state and announced an additional 1,500 bags for the PDP State Chairman.

The Senate President lauded Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, for promoting unity in the Senate, stating, “Every senator has an equal voice, regardless of party. Constructive opposition is essential.” Moro described Akpabio as a leader focused on providing lasting benefits rather than short-term gains.

Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC, called the empowerment programme “mega, marvellous, and magnificent.”

The event was attended by prominent political and community leaders, including Obongemem Ekperikpo Ekpo (Minister of Petroleum Resources, Gas), Senator Ita Enang (APC Chieftain), Senator Ekong Sampson (Akwa Ibom South), and Paramount Rulers of Ikot Ekpene and Essien Udim.

In his closing remarks, Akpabio underscored the importance of collective effort in building a better Nigeria and assured his constituents of continued representation and development-driven initiatives.
