Nigeria well positioned as W’African trade hub – LASG

The Lagos State Government has said that with the introduction of the Authorised Economic Operator by the Nigeria Customs Service, the country has been well positioned as the West African trade hub.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated this over the weekend during the official launch of the AEO programme in Lagos.

Represented by the Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose, Sanwo-Olu explained that by creating a more predictable, efficient, and secure trading environment, this programme will attract both local and foreign investors, driving economic diversification and sustainable growth.

“As we integrate into the global trade ecosystem, the AEO programme stands as a pivotal initiative that will not only boost our national revenue but also solidify Nigeria’s position as the preferred trade hub in West Africa,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He said that the state, being Nigeria’s commercial and maritime heartbeat, is fully committed to the successful implementation of the AEO programme.

Sanwo-Olu said the programme marks a pivotal moment in the collective pursuit of an efficient, transparent, and secure trade environment.

“The AEO programme is nothing short of a game-changer for trade and security.

It is a globally recognised framework that strengthens partnerships between customs authorities and businesses committed to compliance, security, and best practices in supply chain management,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

According to him, the state has made significant contributions to this initiative through infrastructure development, policy support, enhanced security and trade facilitation, “digitalisation and smart trade initiatives, investment in logistics and export promotion, and by facilitating access to global markets.”

Sanwo-Olu added that these efforts underscore the state’s dedication to fostering a thriving trade ecosystem.

“Lagos State just this week held the Lagos State Industrial Policy (2025-2030) Consultative Assembly and Validation Workshop. The LSIP focuses on export competitiveness, infrastructure development, ease of doing business, sustainability, and inclusivity,” he said.

He emphasised that by granting AEO accreditation to businesses that meet these high standards, the country is not only enhancing security but also streamlining trade operations.

The governor said that it means faster cargo clearance, fewer trade barriers, and a more seamless business environment.

“For Nigeria, this programme represents a significant step forward. It will reduce bottlenecks, boost efficiency, and make doing business easier and more attractive. The AEO programme is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together building trust, fostering growth, and creating a brighter future for trade in our nation,” he said.

He urged all the stakeholders to embrace the initiative wholeheartedly, adding that the benefits include faster customs clearance, reduced operational costs, priority treatment, and increased global recognition.

Sanwo-Olu said that the state government remains steadfast in their commitment to providing the necessary support and infrastructure for the seamless implementation of the AEO programme.

He promises to work with all relevant stakeholders to create a conducive environment for trade and investment, stressing that the state believes that economic prosperity is best achieved through strong partnerships between the public and private sectors.
