The Nigerian Navy has announced plans to establish a full-fledged naval base in Yauri, Kebbi State.
The strategic move to boost internal security and enhance surveillance of inland waterways was announced on Thursday when a high-powered naval delegation paid a courtesy visit to Governor Nasir Idris at the Government House, Birnin Kebbi.
Naijaonpoint reports that the delegation, led by Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, represented the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.
Rear Admiral Nwatu explained that the expansion of naval operations into Kebbi is part of the Navy’s evolving maritime strategy aimed at securing the River Niger from increasing criminal activities.
“River Niger, despite its immense contributions to agriculture, power, and livelihood, is increasingly being exploited by criminal elements for smuggling arms and other illicit activities,” Nwatu said.
“We have observed that the river is a major convergence route for such threats, which is why the Navy deems it necessary to extend its operations into Kebbi.”
He stated that the proposed base would complement existing naval infrastructure in Niger State and establish a strong security presence along the critical waterway, which spans much of Nigeria.
Responding to the announcement, Governor Nasir Idris hailed the decision as both “timely and strategic,” citing heightened security challenges, particularly in southern Kebbi.
“We have never had a naval base in Kebbi before, and we are grateful to the Chief of Naval Staff for this initiative,” Idris said.
“Given the border we share with Niger Republic and Benin Republic, and the increasing threats from trans-border banditry, we see this as a much-needed intervention,” the Governr noted.
Governor Idris assured the delegation of his administration’s full support to ensure the smooth establishment of the base.
“The state government will provide all necessary assistance, including temporary accommodation for immediate take-off, pending the construction of a permanent base,” the governor promised.
He further highlighted that while the marine police currently operate in the area, they lack adequate numbers and resources, making the Navy’s intervention essential for safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and critical national assets.

It aims to improve maritime policing, deter arms smuggling, and curb other criminal activities along inland waterways, thereby protecting communities and strengthening economic activities linked to the River Niger.
