A stray bullet shot by an officer of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has killed a secondary school student on his way to write the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident occured on Tuesday, May 19, 2025, around the Welfare Hospital area in Alakia, Ibadan.
Eyewitnesses reported that the officer, in pursuit of a fleeing vehicle the Gbagi Market Road, opened fire in an attempt to stop a suspect. One of the bullets allegedly missed its target and struck a schoolboy who was inside on his father’s car alongside his twin brother.

The boy was said to have been immediately rushed to Welfare Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
According to bystanders, the deceased and his twin were en route to their examination center at the time of the incident.
In the viral videos sighted by IntelRegion, the student lay lifeless on a hospital stretcher, with injury around his waist, which sympathisers claimed was from the gunshot.
A hole was also observed in the father’s car, which could have been caused by gunshot.
There were also blood stains on the car’s floor. Many people were seen sympathising with the boy and expressing frustration over alleged persistent police brutality in the area.
The sympathizers and market traders at the scene in a protest took the boy’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat. There, demonstrators demanded immediate justice and sought an audience with Governor Seyi Makinde
As of press time, neither the Oyo State Police Command nor the state government had issued an official statement.
