Nigeria’s population projected to exceed 237m by 2025

This marks an increase from the 235,072,214 recorded in December 2024, reflecting a growth of 4,796,533 people between 2023 and 2024.

Globally, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that the world population grew by over 71 million people in 2024, slightly slower than the 75 million increase recorded in 2023.

Nigeria accounts for 2.85% of the global population, ranking sixth among the world’s most populous countries.

Lagos remains the most populated city with 15,388,000 residents, followed by Kano (4,910,000), Ibadan (3,649,000), Abuja (2,690,000), and Port Harcourt (2,120,000).

53.9% of the population resides in urban areas, totaling 125,447,884 people in 2024.

Nigeria’s population density is 255 people per square kilometer, with a total land area of 910,770 km².

The report also highlighted demographic details, noting that Nigeria’s median age is 17.9 years, and the life expectancy at birth is 54.6 years (54.9 for females and 54.3 for males).

Globally, the world population is projected to hit 8.09 billion by January 1, 2025.
