The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather outlook predicting dust haze across the northern and central regions, and cloudiness with isolated thunderstorms in parts of the South between Monday and Wednesday.
The forecast, released on Sunday in Abuja, cautioned that visibility could drop significantly in some northern states due to suspended dust particles.
NiMet said moderate dust haze with visibility of 2km to 5km is expected on Monday over parts of Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno and Yobe.
The rest of the northern region will experience slight dust haze.
In the central region, a slight dust haze is anticipated throughout the day.
For the South, NiMet forecasts a cloudy atmosphere with sunshine intervals, with isolated thunderstorms likely over Cross River and Akwa Ibom in the morning.
Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms with light rains are expected over Rivers, Delta, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Ogun, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
On Tuesday, moderate dust haze with 2km to 5km visibility is expected to persist across the northern region.
The central region will remain under a slight dust haze.
A cloudy atmosphere with sunshine intervals is expected in the southern region, with isolated thunderstorms likely over Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom later in the day.
NiMet projected that the northern region will remain under moderate dust haze on Wednesday, with visibility again ranging from 2km to 5km.
The central region is expected to experience the same conditions.
In the South, a cloudy morning is expected, followed by isolated thunderstorms with light rains over Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos, Edo, Ogun and Ondo later in the day.
The agency warned that dust particles would remain in suspension, posing risks to individuals with respiratory conditions.
“People with asthmatic health conditions and other respiratory issues should be cautious of the present weather conditions,” NiMet advised.
It also cautioned motorists to drive carefully during rainfall and dust haze, and urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for safe flight planning.
