NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms, Heavy Rains Across Nigeria

NiMet has forecasted thunderstorms and heavy rains across Nigeria from September 4–6.

NaijaOnPoint Nigeria reports that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rains across most parts of the country from Thursday, September 4, to Saturday, September 6, 2025. The outlook was released on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to NiMet, the northern region is likely to experience thunderstorms of varying intensity, with states such as Yobe, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Katsina, Gombe, and Borno expected to see morning or evening rains during the three-day period.

“Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Yobe, Kano, Jigawa, and Bauchi States in the morning hours, while Adamawa, Taraba, Zamfara, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Jigawa, and Yobe may experience afternoon or evening showers,” NiMet reported.

In the central region, cloudy mornings are expected, followed by thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rains over Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Kwara, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) later in the day.

The southern region is forecast to have cloudy mornings with light showers in Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States, intensifying to moderate or heavy rainfall in the afternoon and evening. NiMet warned that heavy rains could cause temporary flooding in low-lying areas, disrupt road traffic, and affect outdoor activities.

NiMet urged the public to take precautions, including securing loose objects, avoiding long drives during heavy rainfall, disconnecting electrical appliances, and staying away from tall trees. Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather updates for safe flight planning.
