The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast heavy rains, thunderstorms, and possible flash floods in several parts of the country between Monday, September 22, and Wednesday, September 24, 2025.

Naijaonpoint reports that the agency, in its latest weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, advised Nigerians to take necessary precautions as the wet season deepens, warning that motorists, farmers, and residents in flood-prone areas remain at particular risk.

NiMet said residents in the northern region should brace for isolated thunderstorms with light rains on Monday morning in Adamawa and Taraba.

As the day progresses, more areas including Kaduna, Gombe, Kebbi, Zamfara, Bauchi, Southern Borno, and Taraba will likely experience thunderstorms with rainfall.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the forecast indicates cloudy skies with sunshine intervals, but with thunderstorms and rains expected in parts of Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Borno, Adamawa, Katsina, and Sokoto.

For the central region, NiMet predicted a cloudy atmosphere mixed with sunshine intervals in the early hours of Monday.

Isolated thunderstorms with light rain are expected in parts of Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger, the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, and Kogi, particularly in the morning.

As the day progresses, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are forecast for most parts of the region, and this pattern is expected to persist into Wednesday, with significant rains likely in Plateau and Nasarawa.

In the southern states, NiMet predicted cloudy skies and sunshine intervals on Monday morning, with light rains and thunderstorms over Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected to cover most of the region.

The agency particularly warned of flash floods in Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States, urging local authorities to prepare emergency response plans.

Similar conditions are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday across the South, with persistent thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in parts of Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Anambra, and Enugu.

NiMet Issues Public Safety Advice

NiMet cautioned Nigerians to remain vigilant during the forecast period and issued the following advisories:

For motorists: Drive cautiously during rainfall to avoid accidents caused by slippery roads and poor visibility.
For farmers: Avoid applying fertilizer and pesticides just before rains to prevent nutrient leaching and wastage.
For households: Disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms to prevent power surges.
For residents: Stay away from tall trees, weak structures, and loose objects that could fall or be blown away by strong winds.
For airlines: Obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for safe flight planning.

“We urge the public to remain calm but cautious. Staying updated with daily weather information remains the safest approach during this rainy season,” NiMet advised.
