“NNPCL Launches Five Mini-LNG Plants In Kogi” — Projects To Produce 97m Cubic Feet Gas For Power, Cooking Daily

The plants, which have a combined capacity to produce 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, are expected to boost local gas supply for cooking, mobility, and power generation.

NNPCL is partnering with various private companies to build the LNG plants, including NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday in Ajaokuta.

According to Mele Kyari, the Group CEO of NNPC Ltd, the project represents a strategic leap towards energy sufficiency, off-grid industrial support, and carbon emission reduction in Nigeria. Kyari emphasized the importance of natural gas as a catalyst for industrialization, job creation, and economic diversification.

The new LNG plants are expected to increase access to energy for millions of Nigerians, particularly in regions that currently lack access to gas pipeline infrastructure. The project will also provide job opportunities, promote economic growth, contribute to the nation’s GDP, and support the Federal Government’s flare-down initiatives.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, assured NNPCL and its partners of the Federal Government’s support, stating that the initiatives align with the government’s aspirations of harnessing Nigeria’s abundant gas resources for economic development, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing the well-being of Nigerians.

The plants are expected to tap into the rich natural gas deposits in Kogi state and the Ajaokuta-Obajana pipeline, boosting the production and availability of LNG for power plants, cooking gas, and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for vehicles. This development follows the recent launch of the federal government’s 10-for-10 Campaign, which aims to convert 10,000 commercial vehicles to run on CNG within 10 weeks.
