Three members of the Taraba State House of Assembly have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The lawmakers are Umar Adamu, representing Jalingo 1 constituency, and Zakari Sanusi, representing Ibi constituency, who both left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Anas Shaibu, representing Karim 2 constituency, defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Reading their letters of defection on the floor of the house, John Kizito, the Speaker, said the move followed Governor Agbu Kefas’ push to turn around the fortunes of the state.
He added that the lawmakers arrived at the decision after careful consideration and consultations with stakeholders, political associates, and constituents.
In his letter, Shaibu said his defection was in the best interest of his constituents.
“Aligning with the PDP would help me better serve the interests of my constituents,” he said.
He added that joining the PDP would enable him to contribute more effectively to the progress of the state.
Adamu, in his letter, said he decided to move after consultations with his supporters in Jalingo 1 constituency.
“I appreciate the opportunities I had while in the NNPP, but after careful consultations with my good people of Jalingo 1 and due consideration, I believe the PDP’s ideology and vision better align with my values and commitment to our people,” he said.
Sanusi also expressed similar reasons for joining the ruling party.
Of the 23 members of the assembly, 16 now belong to the PDP while eight are with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
