The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has faulted the call by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the cancellation of Saturday’s by-elections in Kano State, describing the demand as “frivolous and unfounded.”

Naijaonpoint reports that the APC had earlier urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the Shanono/Bagwai constituency by-election and the re-run in Ghari constituency, citing what it described as “extreme violence” during the polls.

The call came after the Kano Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Audu Zango, confirmed that more than 100 suspected political thugs were arrested in connection with disturbances during the Bagwai by-election.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Ladipo Johnson, the NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, dismissed the APC’s claims, stressing that the elections were peaceful, credible, and in line with Kano’s electoral history.

“The APC’s request is frivolous and bereft of facts and reality. The bye-elections were free, fair, credible, and peaceful. By virtue of Kano being an NNPP stronghold, it is unimaginable that the results could have been otherwise,” Johnson said.

He added that the elections had already been validated by INEC officials who conducted the exercise, affirming that the outcomes were credible and that the NNPP candidates had won legitimately.

The NNPP spokesman also commended voters for their resilience, as well as INEC and security agencies for ensuring what he described as “a credible voting exercise.”
