A political pressure group within the All Progressives Congress (APC), the North Central APC Accord, has thrown its weight behind Senator Mohammed Sani Musa as the next national chairman of the ruling party following the resignation of Abdullahi Ganduje.
In a statement issued on Sunday and jointly signed by its president, Rev. Matthias Ikani, and secretary general, Ambassador Moses Audu, the group described Senator Musa as “the most credible and unifying option” to steer the party through a critical phase of internal reorganisation.
Part of the statement read: “We make this call not on the basis of mere sentiment, but from a long-standing conviction that Senator Sani Musa represents the future of progressive leadership in our party.
“He is calm, visionary, tested and trusted. In a time when our party needs internal healing and national balance, Senator Musa is the bridge between legacy and future.”
The group urged President Bola Tinubu and the party’s national leadership to cede the vacant national chairmanship to the north-central zone, citing fairness, justice, and the need for renewed internal cohesion.
It argued that since the formation of the APC in 2013, the North Central has been a consistent support base, contributing to the party’s electoral victories, yet has not produced a substantive national chairman.
“This is a matter of equity and justice. Our region has played its part in building and sustaining this party from the days of the CPC-ACN merger.
“Yet, the North Central has never produced a substantive national chairman,” the group added.
Senator Musa, who represents Niger East in the Senate and chairs the Senate Committee on Finance, was described as a disciplined and strategic figure with no political baggage.
“He has no history of factionalism or backroom deals that damage public trust.
“We have watched Senator Musa closely — in his constituency, on the floor of the Senate, and within the party. He exudes discipline, strategic thinking, and humility,” the statement noted.
The group warned that choosing a chairman from outside the zone or one without grassroots acceptance could deepen internal rifts and reduce public confidence ahead of the 2027 general election.
“Our democracy is maturing, and the APC must reflect that maturity. Leadership cannot be reduced to reward systems or political survival tactics. It must reflect balance, inclusion, and merit,” the statement said.
The North Central APC Accord also appealed to President Tinubu to support an inclusive and consultative selection process.
“The president has a historic opportunity to reinforce party unity by supporting a process that reflects the values of equity and internal democracy — values he once championed as national leader of the party,” the group added.
Several youth and women groups have also reportedly endorsed Senator Musa in recent days, describing him as “a servant leader with the right temperament for national leadership.”
