The death of notorious bandit leader Kachalla Yellow Danbokolo has sparked celebrations in Zamfara State and across parts of the North-West.
Naijaonpoint reports that the demise, following a fierce gun battle with the Shinkafi Volunteer Forces, is being hailed as a major blow to criminality in the region.
According to security sources who spoke with The Nation, Danbokolo and at least 173 bandits were killed in a surprise offensive launched by locally mobilised vigilante fighters. Many of the victims were buried in mass graves last week following clashes in Shinkafi LGA.
Although the Department of State Services (DSS) has not been officially linked, insiders say the agency played a covert role in planning and providing intelligence support behind the operation.
Residents of Kurya District, long terrorised by the bandit factions, view the kill as a turning point.
One villager told The Nation, “We are in serious celebration mood. It is hard to believe that Danbokolo, a man whose name used to strike fear in our hearts, is no more. I can authoritatively tell you that Danbokolo is the man behind the mask… Turji merely communicates, while dreaded Danbokolo is the executioner of all the evil.”
Another community member reported scenes of jubilation, “Not only Danbokolo was killed, at least 173 bandits loyal to him have been killed and buried within the week… Loyalties to Turji are collapsing; many are seeking amnesty and fleeing.”
The lethal strike on Danbokolo’s camp has caused panic within Bello Turji’s ranks. Some insurgents are now reportedly seeking surrender, fearing further volunteer-led operations.
“This is the first time we believe that these bandits will soon be gone for good… Bello Turji has no hiding place,” the local resident added.
Local farmers have expressed cautious optimism that the coming farming season might finally proceed without the extortion and “taxes” imposed by bandits.
They have also praised the efforts of the volunteers and thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the security push.
