The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of abusing his office and exerting undue influence on key state institutions.
The group said Wike’s recent actions show a growing pattern of overreach that could weaken democratic governance and erode public trust in government agencies.
In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the coalition raised alarm over what it described as political intimidation and interference in matters outside the FCT minister’s constitutional role.
According to the group, the most worrying issue is the alleged use of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to target Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.
Charanchi said the situation demands public attention, warning that silence could normalise abuse of power at the highest levels of government.
“It is imperative to address these issues publicly, as they not only threaten the integrity of the political landscape but also undermine the principles of governance and accountability that should guide our nation,” he said.
The coalition accused Wike of repeatedly acting beyond his authority and ignoring the limits attached to his office.
“Wike’s tenure has been marked by a troubling pattern of behavior that includes unwarranted encroachments into territories beyond his jurisdiction. His blatant disregard for the boundaries of his office is alarming. As a minister, Wike is expected to uphold the principles of federalism and respect the autonomy of state governments,” Charanchi stated.
The group claimed that instead of focusing on his responsibilities in the FCT, the minister has allegedly involved himself in party politics and conflicts across states.
“However, his actions suggest a troubling propensity to interfere in the affairs of political parties and to muscle opponents, thereby crossing the red lines of tolerance that are essential for a functional democracy,” the statement added.
CNG described the alleged EFCC action against Governor Mohammed as the clearest sign yet of political misuse of federal institutions.
“One of the most egregious examples of Wike’s overreach is his recent manipulation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed. This blatant misuse of power is pushing the limits of tolerance far too far and is simply unacceptable,” Charanchi said.
The coalition also questioned the independence of the anti-graft agency, suggesting that its response to the Bauchi governor’s comments appeared politically motivated.
“The response from the EFCC to Governor Mohammed’s remarks is nothing short of a scripted defense for Wike’s political maneuverings, raising serious questions about the independence of this critical institution,” the group stated.
CNG warned that political power is temporary and urged restraint, dialogue, and respect for democratic norms.
The group said no individual should act as if they control state institutions or political outcomes.
It added that history shows that political excesses often attract consequences.
