Forest currently boast two Super Eagles stars, Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi, in their ranks but a third could join before the end of the summer transfer window

Nottingham Forest have emerged as surprise contenders to sign Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman, hoping to capitalise on Atalanta’s refusal to sell to Serie A rivals Inter Milan, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 27-year-old, who scored 20 goals across all competitions for Atalanta last season, has formally requested to leave Bergamo this summer.

While Inter have already agreed personal terms with the former Fulham attacker, their bids have yet to meet Atalanta’s €50m (£45m) valuation.

That stance has kept the door open for Premier League suitors, with Arsenal and now Nottingham Forest both ready to swoop, according to The Sun.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners view Lookman as a more affordable alternative to Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, while Forest are seeking a dynamic replacement for Anthony Elanga, who joined Newcastle earlier in the window.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side believe Lookman’s blistering pace, versatility across the front line, and direct style would slot perfectly into their attack.

However, persuading the Super Eagles star to join a side without Champions League football could prove their biggest challenge, especially with Arsenal and Inter offering opportunities in Europe’s premier club competition.

Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has pledged to be ambitious in the market as part of a push for sustained European qualification. The club’s intent has already been shown through Dan Ndoye’s arrival and Morgan Gibbs-White’s contract extension despite strong interest from Tottenham. Landing Lookman would represent their boldest statement yet.

According to The Guardian, Inter are preparing a fresh bid that could finally meet Atalanta’s asking price. Yet Atalanta’s reluctance to strengthen a direct league rival could give Forest, and potentially Arsenal, a crucial opening.

Lookman’s situation has become increasingly tense, with the winger missing a few scheduled individual training sessions at the club’s Zingonia base. The Nigerian forward has also not featured in any of Atalanta’s preseason friendlies.

His departure now appears inevitable; the only question is which club can match Atalanta’s demands and offer the clearest vision for his next career step.

Lookman is currently valued at €60 million by Transfermarkt.
