NSCDC arrests, detains officers over N5.2m extortion

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has taken into custody several of its officers following allegations that they extorted ₦5.2 million from a traveler.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale, the officers involved have been ordered to report to the Corps’ national headquarters in Abuja, where a comprehensive investigation will be conducted.

This action follows a directive from the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who demanded an immediate probe after a viral video surfaced online showing NSCDC personnel allegedly extorting money from travelers en route from Ado-Ekiti to Akure.

The Commandant-General of the Corps, Ahmed Audi, condemned the behavior of the officers, labeling their actions as unprofessional and a blatant violation of the NSCDC’s Code of Ethics and Standard Operating Procedures.

In line with the Minister’s directive, the officers have been detained to allow the disciplinary committee to commence a full investigation into the allegations. The outcome of this probe will determine the disciplinary measures to be taken.

The NSCDC has stated that it is committed to transparency and accountability, with its leadership pledging to take firm action against any personnel found guilty of misconduct. The Commandant-General reaffirmed the Corps’ stance against corruption, emphasizing that no officer will be shielded from disciplinary action.

Audi encouraged the public to remain cooperative with the NSCDC and to continue sharing credible information, assuring citizens that they should not fear harassment or extortion by any member of the Corps.

This latest incident adds to a list of internal disciplinary actions previously taken by the NSCDC. In 2022, the Corps dismissed at least 15 officers for what it termed “disgraceful conduct” and sanctioned 16 others for various offenses classified as gross misconduct, all with the approval of the Civil Defence, Corrections, Fire and Immigration Board.
