Mr. Dyke Ogbonnaya, spokesperson for the NSCDC Ogun Command, shared this message during an interview with NAN on Friday in Abeokuta. Ogbonnaya advised Nigerians to refrain from indiscriminately showcasing their lifestyles on social media platforms, noting that this behavior could expose them to criminal activities, particularly kidnapping. He pointed out that individuals often flaunt their achievements—such as new homes, cars, designer clothes, and extravagant lifestyles—on social media, which can serve as clues for criminals. “Displaying these items provides hints to criminals,” Ogbonnaya said, adding that approximately 40 percent of kidnappings are facilitated through social media interactions. He explained that criminals often use social media to lure victims with fake job offers, travel opportunities, and dating sites. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram are commonly used for these schemes. Ogbonnaya emphasized that kidnappers continuously develop new methods to capture their victims and warned that greed has led many people into dangerous situations. He condemned the high incidence of kidnappings and robberies and assured that the NSCDC would continue to collaborate with the police to address these issues. Ogbonnaya commended the efforts of all security agencies and urged Nigerians to report any information about criminal hideouts to the authorities. “The security agencies need the cooperation of Nigerians to win this battle,” he said.
