By Angela Atabo The President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Margaret Oguntala, has emphasised the need for engineers to leverage emerging technologies and innovative solutions in developing smart cities and sustainable urban infrastructure. Oguntala made these remarks while addressing the 55th Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) in Ghana. According to a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, she highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration in achieving this vision. “The conference, with the theme ‘Urbanisation and Smart Cities: Engineering the Future of Ghana,’ underscores the crucial role engineers must play in driving sustainable development,” she said. “It brought together engineers, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss innovative strategies for urban sustainability and the role of engineering in shaping Ghana’s cities of the future.” She stressed the need for engineers to continuously harness emerging technologies and innovative solutions to build smart, inclusive, and sustainable cities. “Our role as engineers is critical in developing smart cities, resilient infrastructure, and sustainable urban ecosystems that can support growing populations,” Oguntala added. Reaffirming the NSE’s commitment to fostering partnerships, Oguntala expressed her excitement about the synergy between engineering bodies across Africa. “I am delighted to witness the growing collaboration among engineering institutions across the continent,” she stated. She emphasised NSE’s dedication to strengthening partnerships with the Ghana Institution of Engineering and other sister institutions to drive technological advancement and sustainable development across Africa. Oguntala also commended the GhIE for its efforts in promoting engineering excellence and fostering regional collaborations to address the challenges posed by rapid urbanisation.
