The Minister of Health, Ali Pate, has claimed that the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has called off its strike action.

The Minister made the declaration on Friday shortly after a closed-door meeting with officials of the Nurses and Midwives Association in Abuja.

According to Pate, the striking nurses decided to call off the strike after both parties reached key agreements on aggrieved issues.

Naijaonpoint reports, however, that the union leaders declined to talk to newsmen on the outcome of the meeting.

It would be recalled that the nurses and midwives embarked on a warning strike on July 29, 2025, over claims that the federal government has failed to address their demands.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Cross River State chapter of NANNM, Mrs Josephine Bassey, had said the strike would not be called off except the government addressed their demands.

Bassey explained that most of the demands centred on administrative issues, such as implementing policy papers and enforcing court judgments.

“Our demands include the gazetting of the nursing scheme of service approved since 2016 and the creation of a Department of Nursing in the Federal Ministry of Health.

“Another key demand is the centralisation of internship for nursing graduates,” she said.

The NANNM official noted that one of their key demands was the gazetting of long-standing approvals by the National Council on Establishments.

She added that other demands include the review of provisional allowances for nurses and midwives, as well as the appointment of nurses to the boards of federal and state health institutions.

She also emphasized the urgent need for more nurses due to severe staffing shortages.
