President Bola Tinubu has pledged his administration’s commitment to increased investment in sports and youth development.
The president made the pledge on Friday in Asaba at the opening ceremony of the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba. Delta.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Mr. Sunday Dare, Tinubu described the games as a platform for the discovery of talents that would be future champions in national and international sporting events.
He emphasised his administration’s foresight in recognition of sports as a vital tool in strengthening the unity of the country as one people.
The President expressed satisfaction with dedication, managerial abilities of the chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mr. Shehu Dikko, and the Director-General of the Commission, Mr Bukola Olopade.
He described them as experienced sports administrators that would continue to make the country great in sports development.
Also in his welcome address, Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, said his administration was steadfast at empowering sports athletes, and improving sports facilities across the state.
The governor, represented by the Speaker of the Delta House of Assembly, Mr Imomotimi Guwor, assured that the state would continue to be a good host as a home of sports in Nigeria.
He said it is a thing of pride and joy that Delta has over the years produced many sports men and women, who have represented the country in national and international sporting events.
”Today is a special moment for Delta as we welcome all of you, athletes, officials and visitors to Asaba for the 9th National Youth Games.
“This event is more than sports, it is a celebration of our young people, national unity and the nation’s prosperous future in sports which brings us together as one people”, Oborevwori said.
The Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Mr. Bukola Olopade, disclosed that a lot had been achieved by the commission under the chairmanship of Shehu Dikko.
He said the 9th National Youth Games provided opportunities for the nation’s talented youths to be discovered and nurtured as future stars that will represent the country.
Earlier, the chairman of the local organising committee for the games, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori, said that Delta is committed to a memorable hosting of the 9th national youth games.
“Today, we welcome you to Delta on the occasion of the 9th edition of the national youth games, holding in Asaba.
“The national youth game presents a breeding ground for future champions in our national sporting life.
“Once again, it is my honour to welcome you to Delta, a state where champions are made. It is our humble belief that you will all have a wonderful stay”, Oborovwori said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the opening ceremony featured a colourful display of music, dance and various artiste performances, as well as match past by state contingents. (NAN)
