NYSC withdraws serving corp members over alleged assault

Approximately 10 Corps members, serving in both the junior and senior sections of the school, were pulled from their posts on Monday by the Kwara State NYSC directorate following an alleged assault on a female Corps member by several female teachers. These teachers accused her of failing to greet them.

It was reported that the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Y. D. Ahmed, visited the school on Monday before inspecting the 2024 Batch C, Stream 2, Corps members participating in the ongoing orientation course in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area.

He ordered the temporary withdrawal of all Corps members from the school to ensure their safety.

When reached for comment, the Public Relations Officer of NYSC in Kwara, Oladipo Morakinyo, confirmed the withdrawal of both junior and senior school Corps members.

“Yes, it is true that all the NYSC members serving at the school have been temporarily withdrawn pending the outcome of an investigation by the government panel regarding the alleged assault on one of the Corps members. Although the assaulted Corps member was in the junior school, we decided to withdraw all members in the senior school for their protection,” Morakinyo stated.

It should be noted that a female Corps member (name withheld) was reportedly assaulted on Thursday by some teachers at the school for not greeting them properly.

The Kwara State government condemned the incident and established an investigative team to address the matter.

Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, condemned the assault on the Corps member by a teacher named Amuzat Fatima Nike, emphasizing that such actions are unacceptable in society.

She affirmed that Kwara State is known for its peace and harmony and that the government will not tolerate any actions that threaten this environment in educational institutions.

The Commissioner also mentioned that the Anti-Loitering Team from the Ministry and the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission conducted an unscheduled visit to the school to investigate the alleged assault and restore calm.

She urged the NYSC management and all involved to remain patient, law-abiding, and to perform their duties without fear, assuring that the teacher in question has been summoned and will face appropriate disciplinary measures.
