The Akran of Badagry, Oba De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, the paramount ruler of the historic Badagry Kingdom in Lagos State, has passed away at the age of 89.

Oba Menu-Toyi I ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, and ruled for 48 years.
His long reign made him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Lagos State.
During this period, he became a central figure in the social, cultural, and traditional life of Badagry and its neighbouring communities.
Born on September 18, 1936, the late monarch had a rich professional background before becoming king.
He worked as a teacher in several schools within the Badagry area before moving into journalism.
He was associated with notable newspapers including West African Pilot, Daily Sketch, and New Nigeria, where he rose to the role of Acting News Editor for the southern region.
His experience in education and the media shaped his leadership style, which focused on dialogue, inclusion, and community growth.
Following approval by the Lagos State Executive Council in 1976, he was crowned as the 17th Akran of Badagry.
He also served as the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, a position that placed him among the most influential traditional rulers in the state.
In recognition of his service to the nation, he was awarded the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic in 1981.
He also received honorary degrees, including a Doctor of Laws.
Throughout his reign, Oba Menu-Toyi I played a major role in promoting peace, unity, and development in Badagry, a town known for its deep historical roots as a former slave port and one of the earliest centres of Western education and Christianity in Nigeria.
The Akran Palace confirmed that medical professionals certified his death and that traditional burial rites have commenced in line with custom.
