Oba Of Benin Distances Self From Attack On Pedro Obaseki

The Palace of the Oba of Benin has dissociated itself from the recent assault on media personality, Don Pedro Obaseki, following his comments at a UK event reportedly hosted by former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, the palace said the attack was not authorised by the Oba of Benin, His Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II.

The BTC described the Oba as a peaceful and accommodating leader who does not support or promote violence of any kind.

“The unfortunate incident in which Pedro Obaseki was manhandled was not authorised by the Oba of Benin.

“And it cannot be authorised because it is not in the character of our revered monarch to do so. The Oba of Benin is a peace-loving father to all,” the statement read.

The council also warned youths against taking the law into their own hands, urging them to respect legal processes and allow security agencies to handle disputes.

“The Benin Traditional Council also wishes to advise our youth not to take the laws into their hands on any issue no matter the degree of provocation,” the statement added.

It further advised social media users to verify information before publication to avoid spreading misinformation.

“Social media users should equally endeavour to cross-check information appropriately before posting,” the BTC said.

The Oba of Benin also extended New Year wishes to the public, reaffirming his commitment to peace and unity.
