Obasanjo Visits Alaafin Of Oyo Amid Feud With Ooni

Obasanjo

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has paid a courtesy visit to the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, in Oyo Town.

Naijaonpoint reports that the visit comes amid recent tension following Oba Owoade’s criticism of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, over the conferment of the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on Ibadan businessman, Dotun Sanusi.

The Alaafin had argued that no single monarch possesses the authority to bestow a title with jurisdiction over the entirety of Yorubaland.

In the wake of the controversy, Obasanjo made his first visit to the monarch on Friday, August 29, since his installation as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo in April 2025.

The former president, who was accompanied by his daughter, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, and a delegation of dignitaries, was warmly received at the palace.

However, details of the discussions between Obasanjo and the monarch were not revealed at the time of filing this report.

In other news, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed former President, Olusegun Obasanjo’s claim that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is competing with that of the late Muhammadu Buhari in incompetence, describing the remark as “laughable and disgracefully hypocritical.”

Naijaonpoint reports that the rebuttal was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo.

Obasanjo, in his recently launched book, Nigeria: Past and Future, reviewed the country’s leaders since independence and concluded that Buhari’s administration was the “worst civil administration regime” in Nigeria’s history.

The former president wrote, “Only Bola Tinubu’s administration seems to be competing with Buhari’s for now.”

But the Lagos APC hit back, insisting Obasanjo lacked the moral authority to judge any leader.

“It is ironic that a man whose own time in office is remembered more for political arrogance, squandered opportunities, and failed democratic subversion would have the audacity to label anyone incompetent,” the party said.
